Burchell Wilson has been based in the Bathurst electorate for the last eight and a half years, and his family have been in the area for over 150 years.
Burchell has earned degrees in Economics and Law from the ANU. In 2016 he travelled to the United States to complete a Masters degrees in economics in Washington DC where he witnessed Donald Trump transform American politics.
As one of Australia’s most accomplished public policy experts and impactful business advocates, he has become dismayed at the lack of leadership from the business community. During his time as the Chief Economist at the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry he led a business coalition that successfully prosecuted the case to rationalize the Renewable Energy Target (RET) and in doing so erased $12.5bn from the nation’s energy bill over a period of 16 years.
Burchell has an unrivalled track record of policy wins at the national level and can legitimately claim to be one of the most impactful public policy economists of his generation.
The business investment allowance stimulus measure he helped put to the Rudd Government in 2009 was judged by the Reserve Bank of Australia to have saved the economy from recession. Research staff at the Reserve Bank of Australia have confirmed the investment allowance was a highly effective stimulus measure and provided $15bn in additional depreciation deductions for business. The measure is now regularly invoked in response to economic downturns.
During his time in Washington, D.C., in addition to earning a Masters in Economics from Johns Hopkins University he received world-leading training in political strategy and tactics. He is the founder of Blackwell Strategies, a strategic communications firm that brings cutting-edge issues and political advocacy to the Australian marketplace.
As one of the few truly independent public policy economists in the Australian political landscape, Burchell now leverages his policy experience in Canberra alongside the capacities of his partners in Washington DC in service of the underdogs of the Australian business community.
